NAWS (Narcotics Anonymous World Services) released their annual financial report recently for fiscal year 2019. In it there was a staggering announcement, NAWS projects of a $1.4 million deficit. The report indicates that there were three major factors contributing to the deficit. Recovery literature income was 5% less than the budgeted amount; contributions were 27% less than budgeted amount; and the total of free and subsidized literature was 68% more than budgeted. This plus rising personnel and fixed expense costs lead to the current predicament, the report states. Keep in mind this is all pre Covid-19. Our Regions representative to the World Service Conference has reported additional financial issues in regard to the effects the current pandemic has had on NAWS. Far less literature is being purchased and donations are way down as Area’s and Groups use their resources to deal with the pandemic on a local level. They report NAWS spoke of taking out loans to help carry them through financially. When asked if they would take money to be forgiven through the CARES act as in the Payroll Protection Program (PPP), regional representatives were told that NAWS did not believe those loans were a viable option, in that, they may amount to an outside contribution if forgiven and that they would look to other loan options available to them. Not two months later Regional representatives were informed that NAWS did in fact take out a PPP loan in the amount of $676,760. They announced discussion on whether or not they will apply for forgiveness is pending. More will be revealed…
